Bitchin Digs Beach Bungal

By Sean Lynch

I've spent a lot of time living and travelling throughout the United States over the last few years. It's simultaneously one of the most beautiful yet downtrodden, insane yet completely logical places on Earth. It's somehow cartoonish and completely corporate while still maintaining an undeniable sense of uniqueness.
However for all of the quirk and charm of America's smaller cities, towns and sub cultures - there's nothing that quite compares to the Californian coast. It's a mecha for the rich and famous, wannabes and never-weres and downright gorgeous to boot.
Australians who have never been, to put it in context, should imagine a place that possesses the stunning environment of the Gold Coast and the personality melting pot of Sydney.
On my most recent venture I was lucky enough to jump in a roofless convertible and travel down the splendid seven miles of coastal bluffs and rolling hills along the Pacific Ocean to my place of rest, a stunning Beach Bungalow appropriately named "Bitchin' Digs".

Surrounded by charming beaches filled with some wild surf (and over looking the Headlands promontory - one of the most significant man made fix-me-ups in the Orange County area) this warm and inviting holiday hide away is the brain child of two sisters, Alyssa Belle Hendrie and Tessa Marie Hendrie, who have lovingly restored and crafted this vibrantly designed hidden property.

The Caribbean-Inspired getaway is instantly recognisable with its one-of-a-kind stained glass (including stained glass bedroom doors) and 800 square foot wrap around cobblestone porch. The surprises and attention to design detail just keep on coming, the master bedroom (cheekily named the "Captain's Room") includes a hanging chair hammock and a clawfoot bathtub, while "The Bamboo Room" feels as thought it's been directly transplanted from a villa in Mexico.

The thing that really stands out about the property is just how quickly you feel at home in it - but more importantly - how little you feel like a tourist there. It's one of the big problems visiting California, never quite knowing if you're part of the culture or simply standing witness to a "show". However, this "Bitchin' Beach Bungalow" makes you quickly forget about being on holiday and truly makes you feel at one with the surroundings.
It's always my first recommendation to first time travellers in LA: hire a car and a GPS! Stay clear of the traditional tourist hot spots and go out and see the country. There's no better way to experience the ever changing landscapes of America than by throwing yourself right in the thick of it - and as Orange County experiences go, Bitchin' Beach House is about as spot on as you're going to get.
Also worthwhile checking out while you've got your car is to head down the coast to Ventura (simply head down Route 101 - the same "101" mentioned in Phantom Planet's famous theme tune to the TV show The O.C.). A gorgeous place which is worth travelling to for the surf alone.
