The Seven Most Haunted Places in Australia

By Ben Wosskow

Halloween is fast approaching. A time of year traditionally associated with the paranormal, many people are on the look-out for signs of the otherworldly. Ghost hunting tours see a rise in popularity, with many places offering special themed Halloween séances and explorations.
However, ghosts don’t just appear at Halloween. Spooky apparitions, floating orbs and other unexplained phenomena are sighted all year round. And, as any paranormal investigator will tell you, ghosts don’t just inhabit creepy abandoned houses - they are often found in surprising locations.
Here are some of Australia’s most haunted places.

Monte Cristo

Monte Cristo Homestead, in Junee, is renowned amongst ghost hunters all over the world. It has earned the dubious accolade of “Australia’s Most Haunted House”, and visitors to this Victorian-era mansion have reported seeing strange lights, presences, and ghostly figures in the opulent rooms.
The house has a disturbing history of grisly accidents and deaths – a boy burned alive in the stables, a small girl “pushed” out of a maid’s arms and down the stairs by a mysterious unseen force, and most recently in 1961, the fatal shooting of a gardener by a local youth obsessed with the film Psycho.
However, this gruesome history didn’t prevent the current owners, Reg and Olive Ryan, from restoring the house to its former glory. Visitors who choose to stay overnight have often seen some of the resident ghosts – including that of Mrs Crawley, the former lady of the house.

Old Melbourne Gaol

Built in the mid-1800s, the Old Melbourne Gaol once housed some of Australia’s most dangerous criminals. The infamous Ned Kelly was hanged here, along with 132 other convicts. The severe grey stone building is rumoured to be haunted by the souls of those who died here – including Elizabeth Scott, the first woman to be hanged in Victoria.
Disembodied voices, strange noises and cold spots have all been reported, and professional parapsychologist Darren Done claims to have detected changes in electro-magnetic radiation in the building, indicating paranormal activity.
Ghost hunters may be disappointed to learn that Ned Kelly’s presence has never been felt in the gaol – the only remnant of his imprisonment is his gruesome death mask, displayed in the onsite museum.

Devil’s Pool

Queensland is home to one of the world’s most dangerous natural pools. Babinda Boulders, also known as the sinister Devil’s Pool, has claimed the lives of at least 17 people since records began in 1959 – most of them young men.
Some have attributed the high death rate to the pool’s deep channels and fast-flowing water – but local legend says otherwise. According to Aboriginal folklore, a young woman once drowned herself there, having been separated from her lover. It’s claimed that she haunts the pool, luring young men to join her in death.
Some people claim to have photographed strange apparitions at the site - and others have reported hearing the sound of someone crying. Whatever the cause of the deaths, visitors are strongly discouraged from swimming here.

Manly Quarantine Station

Manly’s Quarantine Station dates back to 1828, a time when disease-ridden ships arrived in Australia from all over the world. Desperate to prevent the spread of deadly illnesses like Spanish Influenza and smallpox, officials created the Quarantine Station. Thousands of new arrivals were forced to stay there for months, often living in squalid conditions.
Countless people died from disease and neglect – and their spirits are said to haunt the now defunct Quarantine buildings. Visitors to the site have experienced a range of paranormal activity, including cold spots, strange lights, unpleasant feelings, and the ghosts of the workers and patients.
One such apparition is that of a girl with blonde plaited hair, who has been known to speak to visitors, sometimes even taking them by the hand. Another curious phenomenon is the sudden presence of unexplained smells – lemon and potato are fairly common.

Princess Theatre, Melbourne

Melbourne’s glamorous Princess Theatre was built in 1854, and is well-loved by audiences and actors alike. It’s also famous amongst ghost hunters as the home of Frederick Baker, a ghostly resident who’s wandered the stage and dressing rooms since 1888.
He was playing the role of Mephistopheles in Faust when he suffered a heart attack and died, moments after leaving the stage. The rest of the cast initially refused to believe the news, claiming that they’d seen him taking the bows at the end of the play.
For many years the third-row seat in the dress circle was kept vacant during performances, in his honour. His ghost has often been sighted by theatre workers, and is regarded to be a lucky omen.

Redback Range Railway Tunnel, Picton

The spooky Picton Tunnel, in New South Wales, houses a disused stretch of railway. It was operational between 1867 and 1919, after which it was used as an ammunition store during WWII, and then as a commercial mushroom farm.
It’s said to be haunted by the troubled spirits of those who committed suicide on the tracks – and by the ghost of Emily Bollard, a woman who was accidentally killed there in 1916. Some people claim to have seen her apparition in the 592ft long tunnel.
Other reported paranormal activity has included strange lights, large shadows rushing along the walls, and sudden drops in temperature.

Beechworth Asylum, Victoria

This decommissioned asylum, built in 1867, is one of the most haunted buildings of its kind in Australia. Over 3000 patients died on the site throughout the hospital’s history, and many of their spirits are said to wander the buildings and grounds.
The sound of children laughing has been known to echo down the abandoned corridors, and the apparition of a Jewish woman, thrown out of an upstairs window by a fellow patient, is sometimes seen standing at the place where she fell.
It’s not just the ghosts of patients who linger in the asylum. Many visitors have reported seeing the figure of Matron Sharpe – a former staff member renowned for her compassion - walking down the property’s main staircase.
